4 Red Flags That Your Home Might Need Foundation Repair

Have you noticed any problems with your home’s foundation?

The foundation holds the weight of your entire home, but over time, the stresses of changing weather and soil conditions can weaken it. This makes your foundation susceptible to rain and extreme weather, which can then lead to settling and other damage.

Don’t ignore the Red Flags of foundation problems!

The signs of foundation problems may start out small, but if you don’t notice them early, they will only get worse. Once a home’s foundation is damaged, it can be more difficult and expensive to repair.

5 Minute Foundation Self-Inspection

Give yourself an advantage by finding and fixing foundation problems before they get worse. Here are 4 clues that your home might need foundation repair. It just takes a few minutes, so get up right now and I’ll show you what to look for.

1. Walls, Ceilings, and Corners

Walk through your home and look at your walls and ceilings. Pay close attention to all the corners and seams. Do you see any cracks or gaps? Do any walls or corners look uneven? If so, it may mean your foundation is settling or damaged.

2. Doors and Windows

Walk through each room, and open and shut all the doors and windows. Often these give us the first signs of underlying damage. Are any windows difficult to slide open or shut? Do any of the doors stick, or not fit perfectly into the jambs? If you see any of these problems, it might indicate your foundation is settling.

3. Exterior

Walk around outside and inspect the exterior of your home. Do you see any cracks in the stucco? Are there breaks in the seams in the mortar of bricks? Do you notice any cracks in the foundation between the ground and your siding? Are there any places where your foundation seems to be damaged or deteriorating? Any of these clues might indicate your foundation is settling. Also, take a look at your yard. Does the slope and grading of your yard cause the water to run toward your home’s foundation? If so, your home could be more susceptible to water, which often leads to foundation damage.

4. Floors and Basement

Finally, take a look at your floors. Do any of them seem to be uneven or sloping? It may mean there is a bigger problem underneath the flooring. Also go downstairs to your basement and look at all the foundation walls. Do you see any damage, cracks, or places where the foundation seems to be deteriorating?
